Fidelity Launches Retail Crypto Trading
Cryptocurrency as an asset class is highly volatile and can become liquid at any time, making it suitable for investors with a higher risk tolerance. Cryptocurrencies are more susceptible to market manipulation than securities. Cryptocurrencies are not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or the Securities Investor Protection Corporation. Cryptocurrency investors do not enjoy the same regulatory protections as registered securities.
Cryptocurrency accounts and custody and transactions in such accounts are provided by Digital Asset Services, LLC, a limited liability company established by the New York State Department of Financial Services to engage in the business of virtual currencies (NMLS ID 1773897).
Brokerage services supporting transactions in securities are provided by Brokerage Services LLC (“FBS”), and related custody services are provided by National Financial Services LLC (“NFS”), each registered broker-dealer and member NYSE and SIPC.
Neither FBS nor NFS offer cryptocurrencies as direct investments, nor do they provide trading or custody services for such assets. Domain Money founder and CEO Adam Dale claimed the move is a “great development” for the crypto industry.
What Fidelity Got Wrong In Bitcoin First
Fidelity Investments is launching a new 401(k) plan that will allow clients to invest a portion of their retirement savings in Bitcoin.
The Fidelity Digital Asset Account (DAA) will hold Bitcoin and short-term money market investments, providing the account with the necessary liquidity to facilitate investors’ daily transactions. Bitcoins in DAA will be held on Fidelity Digital Assets’ custody platform to provide institutional-grade security, and plan sponsors who choose to offer DAA will set employee contribution and account redemption limits.

What To Look For In A Crypto Custodian
Business intelligence solutions provider MicroStrategy plans to become the first employer to offer digital asset accounts in its retirement plans later this year. Digital asset accounts will be more widely used by employers by mid-year.
As of March 31, Fidelity had $11.3 trillion in assets, including $4.2 trillion in discretionary assets.
The company first began exploring blockchain technology with Bitcoin mining in 2014. A digital asset custody and trading platform was launched in 2018, and a private Bitcoin fund was launched in 2020.
A recent Fidelity survey of U.S. institutional investors found that 30% of respondents would prefer to purchase investment products that include digital assets.
